Since music is such a big part of my life, I decided to start a series on my blog called Meet the Musician. In these posts, I will introduce a musician with a short bio, find out how they started their career and where they are at now. This will of course include samples of their music and where you can go if you choose to support them on their journey. I figured the easiest way to start the Meet the Musician series is with myself, Michelle Thibodeau!
Growing up, gymnastics was my passion, however, a severe back injury at the age of 10 swiftly ended my sports career and I had to find a new hobby. Since I always sang around the house, my parents thought singing lessons would be an activity I would enjoy. Due to my injury, it was the perfect time to start a less active hobby. So, at age 11, I took my first classical voice lesson with Melody Dobson, and I haven’t looked back since!
Here is a run through of some events that shaped the beginning of my Music Career over the course of my teen years:
- 13 yrs old- got my first guitar and learned to play
- 14 yrs old – began songwriting
- 15 yrs old – performed my first guitar & vocal gig at a summer festival
- 16 yrs old – recorded and released my first album of all original music
- 17 yrs old – got the lead role (Christine) in Phantom of the Opera at my high school
- 18 yrs old – accepted into the Canadian College of Performing Arts and moved from New Brunswick to British Columbia by myself
- 19 yrs old – finalist in the TV Show “Over the Rainbow” search for Dorothy in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz.
As we fast forward to the end of my teens, I graduated from the Canadian College of Performing Arts. After giving it some thought, I decided to base my career out of Toronto. So, I moved to Toronto at the age of 21 and still call it home today, 3 years later!
In 2017, I began the year with a professional Musical Theatre contract, where I played the leading lady Nancy in Oliver! the Musical. It was my first Equity (Unionized) Contract and was a great way to start the year.
Next, in June I had the amazing opportunity to sing for David Foster at an event in Victoria BC. Definitely a career highlight thus far and a day I will never forget.
Most recently, I began recording my 3rd album of original songs at Oak Recording Studio in Toronto. In the meantime, I have been playing gigs around the Greater Toronto Area, while, auditioning for theatre, and teaching voice lessons from my apartment.
The album release will be sometime at the end of Spring 2018 and I am very excited to share what I have been working on. For now, you can listen to my most recent single “Checkmate” which was played across Canada on CBC Radio One. This music video was filmed and edited by Grace from The Bennett Studio (Boss Lady Buzz on Grace coming soon).
I’m not sure what 2018 has in store for me. I do know that as long as I am able to keep pursuing my dreams, I’ll be grateful and happy.
