As a Singer-Songwriter, when I listen to a song, I always pay close attention to the words. If the song lyrics make me think, or highly relate to something happening in the world, it usually gives me chills.
People love music for different reasons. For example, my roommate is a choreographer and her favourite songs have an amazing beat to dance to. Another one of my friends is an instrumentalist and his favourite songs are the ones with challenging guitar or piano riffs that leave him in awe. Many people enjoy songs that are catchy and fun to sing to. However, my favourite songs, the ones that truly hit home for me, all of these lyrics make me think.
Some song lyrics peak my interest as a Songwriter because they are clever and witty, but that’s for another post on another day. These next 6 songs I have chosen in particular because of how powerful they are. They pull at my heart strings and speak so much truth to me. I hope these lyrics resonate with you as much as they do with me.
These Song Lyrics Make Me Think:
The song “Hands” by Jewel is not only beautiful, but meaningful as well. There are many songs in the world that tell you not to give up, to have faith and keep going, but this one in particular hits home for me. “My hands are small I know, but they’re not yours, they are my own.” As I am navigating the big city of Toronto all by myself, this song gives me hope. After researching this song, I also learned that Jewel wrote “Hands” while she was homeless, at 18 years old. Not only do the lyrics make me think, but the story gives me faith.
I remember first hearing “Where Is The Love” by the Black Eyed Peas in my middle school art class. My teacher put the song on repeat and told us to create artwork based on how the song made us feel. Since I was only about 12, my understanding of the song was probably just mediocre, but the still the lyrics made me think. Now, even ten years later, “Where Is The Love” is still a favourite of mine. This song explains the way I think about the world better than I could put into words myself.
I am sure you have heard the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. It is a classic based on its’ meaningful lyrics. This song has united people on more than one occasion- Have you seen this video where the people of Paris sing “Imagine” while marching to end terrorism? It reminds us that borders are man-made, and that we should all accept each other and “live as one.”
If you are a country music fan, you have undoubtedly heard “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack. Not only do these lyrics make me think, but both Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou have spoken about this song for what it means to them. It is truly a work of art, in my opinion. This song puts a smile on my face and helps me keep my head up high.
A lesser-known song on this list of lyrics that make me think, is “Not Even The King” by Alicia Keys. Wow, the words in this song are so profound and powerful. I have loved this song for many years, and recently sang it at a wedding for a dear friend of mine. If you haven’t heard this song before, please do take a listen!
Last but not least on this list is a song from the Tarzan soundtrack, “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins. I have loved this song since I was a child and it still makes me tear up every time I hear it. One of the main themes of Tarzan and this song is family. My family means the world to me which is why “You’ll Be In My Heart” is one of my favourites. I know these lyrics make me think because they make me cry!
Now that you’ve heard my list, let me know which songs make you think! It doesn’t have to be because of the lyrics… Maybe it’s the music or a memory that you associate with the song. Whatever it is, let me know in the comments below!
