I’ve been there – Some days it’s a struggle to even get out of bed. Sometimes, just thinking of all the daunting tasks you have to complete throughout the day can be overwhelming and upsetting. So, how can we make getting out of bed to tackle our tough days a whole lot easier? By dividing up your day task by task, living in the moment and taking baby steps.
For example, as a Performer, I have a lot of high stress days where I will have an important audition or showcase. Just the thought alone of getting ready, rehearsing, traveling to my destination, and doing the performance can make me want to curl up and stay in bed; Just a few more hours until I have to tackle this big day. It makes me procrastinate, which makes me behind schedule, which makes me worry even more. Thankfully, in the last year I have come to a realization that taking baby steps will make my day so much more manageable and care-free.
What I Mean By “Taking Baby Steps”
Some days, a task as simple as getting up to pick my clothes, take a shower and get ready for the day is all too much. Guess What? That’s okay. If you break it up into smaller actionable tasks, it gets a whole lot easier.
Tell yourself, all you have to do is stand up. Next, tell yourself all you have to do is jump in the shower. Mentally break up your tasks one by one until there is nothing left you have to do to get ready.
This method works with To-Do lists as well. If you look at all of your daily To-Do’s at once, you will most likely end up overwhelmed and therefore not get any of them done. Just pick one, and do it. Then, pick another. Don’t worry about the rest of the day.
It brings me so much peace to only focus on one thing at a time.
Taking baby steps is still forward progression. After all, the consistent tortoise beats the hare.
Have you been procrastinating a task for hours, days, weeks or longer? I can assure you taking baby steps will help you here as well. If you need to write an essay, first, just open your laptop. Then, just write the first word, the first line, the first paragraph. Before you know it, all of your baby steps will come together and you’ll have accomplished the task you have been dreading most.
Laundry needs folding? Just fold the first 3 items. Need to wash the dishes? Just wash a couple plates. Want to clean your room? Put away one thing.
If, after doing the first couple baby steps it still is too much, that is okay. Take a break, do something else, and get back to it later. However, chances are, once you get into what you are doing, you will have the determination to keep going until you are finished.
We all have those times in our lives where so much is on your shoulders that facing the day can feel like too much. If you ever feel this way in the future, please try taking baby steps. It has worked wonders for me and I feel as though it will work for others as well. I believe in you!
