If you read my Satisfy Her Soul Manifesto, you will know that my goal with this blog is to empower, inspire and motivate. Sometimes, however, I will stray from that niche simply to add some fun, light-hearted posts here and there. This post, my top 10 favourite movies, is one of those posts!
Now, I will admit, although I thoroughly enjoy movies, I am definitely not a film buff. If you are looking for movies with excellent cinematography or innovative, radical acting, these movies probably won’t do it for you. I just like them because they entertained me, made me happy, or remind me of my childhood. Nevertheless, here are, in no particular order:
My Top 10 Favourite Movies:
#1. My Girl
I literally grew up watching this movie. It came out two years before I was born, and I have laughed and cried with main character, 11 yr old Vada Sultenfuss, for as long as I can remember. This movie is charming, delightful and heart-breaking at the same time. One of those films I will never get tired of watching over and over again.
Okay, so I know this one is a little bit cliché to have on my top 10 favourite movies list, but come on. Not only does this story have such AMAZING fictional characters with possibly the greatest love story of all time, but to imagine that it is based on the true story of the sinking Titanic, makes it that much more devastating. In addition, the sinking of this ship happened so close to my hometown, Moncton, that it hits very close to home for me (pun intended). The whole story and movie is just too outstanding not to make my top 10.
#3. Space Jam
My brother and I watched this movie SO many times as kids. I don’t even like basketball but this movie is actually epic. Every time I hear the theme song it floods me with happy memories. To be honest, I kind of want to be Lola for Halloween… Maybe I’ll get my boyfriend to be Bugs Bunny hehe (Sorry David) I’ll let you know how that goes.
#4. Les Misérables
This is pretty much a love-hate movie for most people. I understand that it is very long and filled with spontaneous song, but I’m pretty sure that’s why I love it so much. Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne are goals, Samantha Barks is everything I want to be, and don’t get me started on Hugh Jackman or Anne Hathaway. I’m obsessed with every song, especially On My Own, as I had the chance to perform it as a solo for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber a few years ago. This is definitely my favourite movie musical they have released so far!
#5. Get Out
This is definitely the most recent film on my top 10 favourite movies list, having only been released in 2017. It is also the only horror movie on my list. I love the psychological aspect of this movie and how I didn’t know what was going to happen next. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it!
#6. I Am Sam
I have always been a fan of Dakota Fanning movies, but this one takes the cake because of how incredible her acting is at the young age of 7. If you haven’t seen this movie, it is about an intellectually disabled man fighting for the custody of his daughter. It pulls at your heart strings and will always be one of my favourites.
#7. The Lion King
The music, the storyline and the lessons you learn from this movie have all resonated with me since I was a child. Hakuna Matata is a motto that I live by every single day. My dream is to someday see The Lion King on Broadway!
#8. The Grinch
If you know me at all, you will know that I am obsessed with Christmas. So naturally, I had to include one Christmas movie on this list. I have decided to go with The Grinch because it brings me so much joy and laughter every time I watch it. My favourite version of this film is from the year 2000 with Jim Carrey as the Grinch. I can pretty much recite every line from this movie because I’ve seen it about 20 times. This Dr Seuss story will never get old in my books!
This was one of the first movies I saw in 3D at the movie theatre and it absolutely BLEW MY MIND. I could not believe my eyes. They created the most beautiful world with new beings and even a new language. I am not typically a fan of science fiction movies, but this one was a game-changer for me. The visuals truly left me speechless, and I found the story compelling and innovative. I am SO excited for Avatar 2 in 2020.
#10. Finding Nemo
From the ages of 9-13, Finding Nemo was hands-down my favourite movie. Dory just melts my heart, and the comedy in this film is right up my alley. It seems as though my top 10 favourite movies consist mostly of films for children, but they just bring me so much happiness. I kinda hate fish in real life, but these characters are just too cute. This is another movie that I can pretty much recite by heart.
Movies that almost made this list include Gran Torino, Inception and Juno. If you asked me on a different day, they might have even made the top 10, but today since I am feeling quite nostalgic, they will remain as honourable mentions.
I realize my taste in movies are probably strange, since there aren’t really any “critically-acclaimed” films on my list.
Do you also love any of my top 10 favourite movies? If not, what are some of your favourites that I have not mentioned? Let me know in the comments below, and if I haven’t seen it yet I will definitely give it a watch!
