I’m pretty sure we all have our struggles with procrastination. Whether it’s procrastinating work, chores, scheduling appointments, or any other task that we avoid doing for whatever reason. When I am feeling inspired and motivated, I have no problem working for hours on end and even enjoy it! The problem is we all go through days, weeks or an extended period of time where we lose that drive and even simple tasks become daunting. In these moments, the question I’ve learned to ask myself, is how long will it actually take?
Procrastination is a topic that I do a lot of thinking about. Why do we procrastinate? A lot of times for me, my anxiety is the trigger for procrastination. Other times, I have too much to do and don’t know where to start, so I get overwhelmed and get nothing done.
My solution lately has been to really take a step back and realistically figure out:
How long will it actually take?
Say you have a To-Do list, whether it’s a mental one or a physical one. Calculate how long each task will most likely take. Here is an example of what it might look like:
As you can see, these tasks can all be completed in less than 3 hours of our day. If we start with an easy one that it not very time consuming, we can begin checking things off our list. Before you know it, you will have accomplished everything with lots of time to spare for a relaxing evening.
When I don’t ask myself “How long will it actually take?” my brain plays tricks on me and makes me think each task is unsurmountable. This inevitably leads to leaving things to the deadline, which makes me even more stressed, which makes me procrastinate even more. Now that I have this trick, it truly helps me on the daily.
